Quick Summary

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is now mandatory for a wide range of business and government transactions in India — from MCA filings to e-tenders. This guide covers every DSC type, who needs it, what documents are required, and how to get one in Mumbai within 24 hours.

What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic credential issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) in India. It serves as a digital equivalent of a handwritten signature, uniquely identifying the signer and ensuring the integrity of digitally signed documents.

Under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and its amendments, digital signatures are legally valid in India and are accepted by government departments, courts, banks, and regulatory authorities. A DSC is stored on a USB token (similar in appearance to a pen drive) and must be physically present during signing.

If you have ever needed to file with the MCA, submit an income tax return for a company, bid on a government tender, or file DGFT applications, a DSC is not optional — it is mandatory.

DSC Types Explained — Which One Do You Need?

There are several types of DSC available in India, each for a specific purpose. Choosing the wrong type is a common and costly mistake:

CLASS 3

Class 3 DSC (Sign Only)

The most commonly required DSC. Used for: MCA21 company filings (incorporation, annual returns), Income Tax e-filing for companies, GST registration and returns, EPFO, ESIC, and most government portals.

Best for: Company directors, CAs, and professionals filing with government portals.

CLASS 3

Class 3 DSC (Sign + Encrypt)

Combines signing and document encryption capabilities. Used for: e-tendering on GeM Portal, CPPP, state government procurement portals, and customs filing (ICEGATE).

Best for: Businesses participating in government e-tenders and import-export operations.

DGFT

DGFT DSC

Specifically issued for the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) portal. Mandatory for: IEC (Import Export Code) applications and amendments, DGFT licence filings, and foreign trade policy applications.

Best for: Any business involved in import or export operations.

ORG

Organisation DSC

Issued in the name of an organisation rather than an individual. Used for: e-stamping, bulk document signing, and high-security enterprise applications.

Best for: Larger enterprises and financial institutions requiring organisational-level signing.

Documents Required to Apply for a DSC

👤 For Individuals

  • PAN Card (mandatory)
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
  • Email address

🏢 For Companies / Firms

  • Company PAN Card
  • Certificate of Incorporation / GST Certificate
  • Authorisation letter on company letterhead
  • Authorised signatory's PAN + Aadhaar
  • Signatory's passport photo

Important: Since 2023, Aadhaar-based OTP verification has become the primary mode for DSC issuance. Ensure your mobile number is linked and active on your Aadhaar before applying. If your Aadhaar mobile number is not updated, the process takes longer and may require a Video KYC call instead.

DSC Validity and Renewal

DSC certificates are issued with a validity period of 1 or 2 years. After expiry:

  • The certificate becomes invalid and cannot be used for signing.
  • You must apply for a fresh DSC — renewal is essentially a new issuance.
  • The physical USB token can often be reused; only the certificate inside needs renewal.
  • Set a reminder 30 days before expiry to avoid disruption to business filings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my DSC on multiple computers?

Yes — the DSC is stored on a USB token. You can plug it into any computer, install the driver software once, and use it wherever you need to sign. The certificate travels with the token.

What happens if I lose my DSC token?

Report the loss to the issuing Certifying Authority immediately so the certificate can be revoked. You will need to apply for a fresh DSC. This is why keeping your USB token secure is critical.

Is a DSC valid across all states in India?

Yes. A DSC issued by any licensed Certifying Authority in India is valid nationwide across all government portals and legal proceedings as per the IT Act, 2000.

How much does a DSC cost?

DSC pricing varies by type and validity (1 or 2 years). Contact Susania on WhatsApp for current pricing. We offer transparent, competitive rates with no hidden charges.
